Mo Poo, Mo Problems.
Posted by
onSo, apparently some folks out there are so serious about avoiding chemicals and other bad karma in their hair products that they're simply ditching shampoo (and conditioner) entirely. "No Poo" may be trending among the vegan/hippie types, but that's no reason anyone else has to give up having hair that looks and smells fantastic!
It's true, there's a lot of bad stuff in mainstream shampoos. Just among some of the problems:
- Sulfates: These are the main cleansing agents in shampoos -especially cheap ones- and are basically a harsh form of detergent. It's total overkill for the job. Sure, sulfates get your hair clean, but they also strip it of vital oils and minerals, and can dry out your scalp.
- Pthalates: That's "thay-lates" with a silent P for no good reason. These are a form of aromatic plastic that degrades into a vaguely sweet smell when it hits air. Many low-grade shampoos and other hair products use these to add "Fragrance," even though they've been linked to reproductive disorders, and many types are banned in the EU.(Incidentally, pthalates are also in a lot of cheap plastic toys of various sorts, and should be avoided there if possible as well.)
- Parabens: Parabens are a preservative used mainly in cosmetics, which have also been linked to reproductive disorders because they're an estrogen agonist. While not illegal anywhere (yet?) there's mounting evidence that they're potentially hazardous. They can also cause dryness and itching which is pretty much exactly what a shampoo/conditioner should do... in bizarro world.
- Animal Cruelty: How can you even tell whether your hair care products have been animal-tested, when states are starting to ban reporters from exposing animal abuse? (Seriously, WTF.)
It's easy to see how some people might decide it's better to give up on hair care entirely, but we don't see a reason to throw that particular baby out with the bathwater. After all, who wants their hair smelling like vinegar, baking soda, or seaweed? Those are a few of the "No Poo" alternatives.
No, we say it's much better to find a BETTER shampoo alternative, one without the dodgy chemicals and moral quandaries. In fact, we've got a shampoo that's made from the greatest thing nature ever gave us:
BEER.
Yes, beer. Wonderful beer! Not only does it taste great, but it's also really really ridiculously great for your hair. Who needs sulfates? The amino acids, hops, and yeast in beer all have antibacterial properties. Beer -especially a good dark brew- is rich in Vitamin B, which stimulates hair growth as well as giving it a protective coating against environmental damage.
Duffy's Brew Shampoo and Conditioner gets your hair clean through natural actions, while enhancing it and also ensuring any dandruff-causing bacteria are cleansed away.
Plus, thanks to our own blend of extracts and herbal additives, your hair will smell amazing. We're talking about the headiness of dark craft beer, along with hints of mahogany, caramel, and a slightly sweet touch of berry. This is hair that will turn heads.
